What Is a Dental Emergency?

When something happens to your teeth, you may ask yourself: is this really considered an emergency? To help you determine if you need to make an emergency dental appointment, consider the following:

You are experiencing uncontrollable bleeding

There is swelling around your gums or face

You have a tooth that has been knocked out

You have a toothache that is severe and has not gone away after a couple of days

There has been visible damage to your tooth, such as a crack or chip

If you are experiencing any of the above, or if you are in pain and are not sure what the cause is, it is best to err on the side of caution and give us a call. We will be able to help you determine if you need to come in for an emergency appointment and, if so, we will do everything we can to get you in as soon as possible.

What Should I Do If I'm Experiencing Significant Dental Pain?

If you are in pain, the first thing you should do is call our office. We will ask you about your symptoms and help you determine if you need to come in for an emergency appointment. In the meantime, there are a few things you can try to safely alleviate the pain, including:

Rinsing your mouth with warm water

Gently flossing around the affected tooth to remove any food or debris that may be trapped

Taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen

Applying a cold compress to the outside of your face if you are experiencing swelling

Are Emergency Dental Appointments Covered By Insurance?

In most cases, emergency dental appointments are covered by insurance. However, it is always best to check with your specific insurance provider to be sure. If you do not have insurance or if your insurance does not cover emergency dental appointments, we offer a variety of financing options to make paying for your appointment more affordable.
