3 Reasons We Might Recommend a Crown

Dental crowns, also called “caps,” are one of the most versatile restorations available. Crowns have been successfully used for decades to protect damaged or decayed teeth. Today, with the availability of esthetic materials like porcelain, crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as changing the shape of a tooth.

Your dentist may recommend a crown for any one of a number of reasons, but here are the 3 most common uses for dental crowns:

  • Protect a damaged tooth – Sometimes, a tooth is so damaged that a simple filling isn’t enough to do the job. In this case, your dentist would recommend a crown provide protection and restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile comfortably.
  • After root canal treatment – If you have a cavity and you don’t seek treatment, you put yourself at risk for an infection deep inside your tooth. When this occurs, a root canal needs to be performed to relieve your pain and remove infected pulp. Without treatment, the infection will grow, the pain will worsen, and ultimately, we would need to remove the tooth.
  • Improve the appearance of your smile – Dental crowns today are made using materials like porcelain and zirconia that resemble the translucent qualities of natural tooth enamel. Both materials are highly durable and offer the added advantage of changing the appearance of a tooth. We can change the shape, size, and color of a tooth with a crown because it conceals your tooth.
