Bone Grafting & Sinus Lifts in Boise ID

bone grafting | boise id | atlantis dental care Many people with missing teeth are good candidates for dental implants. But there are certain situations where Dr. Cantwell may need to perform additional procedures for the best possible long-term results.

Two procedures that we offer at our Boise dental office are bone grafting and sinus lifts; both create the perfect environment for the successful placement of a dental implant.

Dr. Cantwell has invested in advanced training and education to make these procedures as safe and effective as possible. During the consultation process, Dr. Cantwell will evaluate your needs and look at your x-rays for clues about any potential complications. The location of your sinuses, blood vessels, nerves, and the roots of neighboring teeth must be noted.

Bone Grafting

Why Is Bone Grafting Necessary?

When a tooth is lost, the bone around the missing root begins to shrink because there’s nothing to support it. While the bone deteriorates, the gums also shrink, creating a sunken appearance. If you’ve lost a tooth and are considering a dental bridge, we can also use bone grafting to correct the cosmetic appearance of the gums.

If you’re interested in a dental implant, but there isn’t sufficient bone in your jaw, we use bone grafting to build up the bone and support the implant. Bone grafting is a procedure used to restore or preserve bone after a tooth is lost. It can also be used to provide space in an area that isn’t wide enough to securely hold a dental implant. Dr. Cantwell will evaluate your case and look at your x-rays to determine whether bone grafting is appropriate.

What Does Bone Grafting Do?

man during sinus lift exam in boise idThe bone graft is placed in the jaw where the tooth was lost. It builds up the existing bone so that the implant has a foundation to which it can attach. Grafting maintains bone height, speeds up healing, and prevents bone loss. It creates the perfect space for the successful placement of a dental implant. Without grafting, the bone can shrink during healing, making the placement of an implant virtually impossible.

The entire grafting procedure takes around four months to heal, depending on your health history. Now you are ready for dental implant placement at our Boise, ID dental office!

Sinus Lifts

When Would I Need a Sinus Lift?

Another potential problem with the placement of your dental implant is that your sinus may be too close to your upper jaw for us to place it successfully. In this case, Dr. Cantwell will recommend a procedure known as a sinus lift.

Similar in nature to bone graft surgery, a sinus lift increases bone density in the upper jaw. You may also hear the procedure referred to as sinus augmentation. The bone is added between your jaw and sinuses on either side of your nose.
